We live our lives going through change and transitions. Some of these changes happen when we're young:
Some of them happen later:
We're not taught what to expect with a major life change or how to deal with it. Transition is a process which takes place over time. The process includes ending or learning to let go of an old situation, going through temporary stages, and beginning again. Endings are often difficult. You may have something exciting about to happen in your life but you may also be separating from the familiar friends, family, places and routines. Or, maybe you may be leaving a job or love relationship that is painful to you. Leaving the familiar without knowing what is ahead is difficult. Endings mean saying goodbye and sometimes we grieve at an ending. Because we often define ourselves by our jobs or relationships it can be frightening to think about change. The ending of a love relationship is particularly difficult. At one time or another many have experienced the intense pain of loving someone who no longer loves you. This is extremely hurtful. We go through the stages of denial and grieving which paves the way to eventually letting go and moving on. It is very important to be aware of your feelings, experience them, and then let yourself heal. The in-between time of transition sometimes feels confusing and chaotic. We search for what shape our lives will take. Innovation and experiment may be a scary time with much trepidation. Our counseling at Bloomingdale Psychological Services can help ease the pain of transition and offer support during this time. You can learn that transition is an ongoing process throughout your life. "Things end, there is a time of fertile emptiness and then things begin anew."
